I recently treated myself to a luxe escape at the Rome Cavalieri, A Waldorf Astoria Resort in Rome — a property that stands out not just for its brand pedigree but for the kind of indulgence that truly makes you feel on holiday. Located on Rome’s highest hill (Monte Mario), it offers sweeping views over the city, including the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica in the distance. Inside, the décor is classic resort-glamour: polished marble, grand art and tapestries, spacious public spaces that feel more like a private museum than a hotel lobby. The pool area and grounds alone are worth a half-day of your itinerary.

Arrival was smooth: I was greeted by name, helped with luggage and whisked to the room with a quick orientation. This level of service set the tone for the stay - elegant without being stuffy. The room I was assigned had a garden view (rather than the full panorama of Rome) but still felt generous in size and very comfortable. Breakfast each morning was expansive and well-done, fresh fruit, pastries, hot dishes, good coffee, a perfect start to busy days of wandering Rome’s streets.

One of the major reasons this stay felt especially rewarding was how I booked it: using my points from the Hilton Honors programme. The Rome Cavalieri is listed as a premium luxury Hilton property in Rome and while the cash rate for high season easily exceeds €600–€1,000 per night, standard award pricing often begins around 80,000 points per night. By leveraging points, and especially by taking advantage of the “5th night free” benefit when booking consecutive nights with points - the effective cost per night dropped significantly. For example: Five nights redeeming 80,000 points each would nominally cost 400,000 points, but with the 5th free it becomes 320,000 points, instantly improving value.

There were a few caveats: the hotel’s location is a bit removed from Rome’s historic centre (you’ll need a taxi or hotel shuttle to reach major attractions) and some reviewers noted the décor feels somewhat dated (though still elegant). Despite that, given the luxuries, the room comfort, the service and the points value, this stay felt like a win. For anyone with Hilton Honors points or free-night certificates, the Rome Cavalieri is a compelling choice when in Rome and willing to trade a bit of walking convenience for resort-style elegance.
